Organize and Save Time: The Timer

Today I am going to talk about one of the most useful tools that I use to keep a clean and organized home; the timer. I love to use a timer throughout my day because it helps me to stay focused and on task, particularly when that task is something I don't really feel like doing. (Oftentimes cleaning!) I use my timer for all sorts of things and I'm sharing a few of them here.

One of my favorite uses for the timer is the Five Minute Pick Up. I set the timer for five minutes, and I use those five minutes to get as much done in a room as I can. So let's say I am working in the living room. I use those five minutes to throw away any garbage, remove dishes and put books and magazines back in  their rightful homes. Then I fold blankets, straighten pillows, hang up stray coats and return shoes to their homes. If I have time left I will wipe down the coffee table and do a quick dusting over all the horizontal surfaces.  It's fun to try and get the whole room back into shape before the timer goes off. When it does, I move on to the next room regardless of whether or not I've finished in the first room.

I find that nearly every time I have managed to whip that room into shape before the buzzer. Then I'll move on to the next rooms, and continue until all the main living areas, the upstairs bathroom and the bedroom are done.  Five minutes in the bathroom is more than enough time to quickly swish the toilet, wipe down the sink and polish the mirror, door and fixtures, and sweep the floor. This means that in 25 minutes my house is picked up, and some light cleaning is done.

Racing the clock is usually all I need to get me motivated for the day, but if it is a day I am feeling particularly tired, I know that I can just do less than half an hour of work and my home is in ship shape.

Another use for the timer: Timing Tasks. I used to hate doing the dishes. I would let them pile up, I'd dread doing them, and then I would be annoyed by the enormous amount of time it took to get through that giant pile. But once I started timing myself and racing the timer (can I finish the dishes in half an hour?), I found that a normal size load of dishes typically took me no longer than fifteen minutes to get through.  Knowing that this less than pleasurable task was so short made it much easier to get through, and made the "pain" more bearable.

The other benefit to this timer trick is that I now know how long tasks take me,  so I can plan my day out better. If I need to head out early in the morning, I know that I have just enough time to make the bathroom sparkle and get the dishes out of the way.

Here are some of the tasks I've timed and been surprised by how quickly they are over:

  • Dishes: Typically  15 minutes. And that's by hand people!

  • Sweeping the Main Floor: Five minutes. This includes the hardwoods throughout the living room and dining room, as well as the kitchen and entryways.

  • Bathroom: Five minutes is just enough time, as I've said, to keep the bathroom in top condition.

  • Mopping: Ten minutes per room. Mopping is strenuous work, so it does make it easier to know that in a mere ten minutes the work will be over!

  • Making the Bed: Two minutes. Seriously! Why would I ever NOT make the bed? I can always spare two minutes!

  • Vacuuming the Stairs: Five minutes. We have wood stairs, so it is quite easy. I know when we had carpeted stairs in the basement it took much longer.

  • Wiping Down Kitchen Cabinets: Fifteen minutes. I simply fill the sink with soapy water and use a rag, and the cabinets are all sparkly in mere minutes!

It's important to remember to take time to rest, just as it is to make time to clean. So I will often set the timer for half an hour of relaxation. That way I don't have to watch the clock, and the buzzer going off is an impartial voice telling me to get back to work. I don't know about you, but I can always find a way to reason with myself and tell myself that I don't need to get back to work!

When faced with a particularly daunting task, or a strenuous one, I will often set the timer. I do this a lot with gardening, because I will get caught up in the work and spend the whole day  in the garden, only to find that I cannot get out of bed the next morning. So I set the timer for an hour or so, and accomplish what I can in that time. Then the next day I do the same thing and accomplish a little bit more! This also works great for big projects like decluttering every room or spring cleaning.

Those are all the ways I can think of today to use your timer as a tool to manage your time. Do you have any others that you'd like to share with me? I'm always looking for new ideas!

A Crazy Life

I know the blog has suffered lately, and to be honest, it hasn't really bothered me. We've kept a really, really hectic schedule the last three months, and there simply wasn't time for everything. That said, it has been an awesome couple of months that I wouldn't trade for anything. I am, however, looking forward to a quieter and more home bound schedule over the summer. I hope! Here's a look at what our life has been like for the last three months:

Sun Feb 14: Jet out to New York City for three weeks of  shopping bliss work .

Friday Feb 19: Head back home amidst a terrible snowstorm, broken hearted that an install got canceled and work was sending us back home.

Feb 20th- March 5th: Entertain delusions of working on basement, avoid working on basement all together.

Friday March 5th - Sunday March 7th: Surprise Lover with much needed get away weekend for some "us time." Sleep lots, eat good food, talk lots.

Thursday March 11: Welcome sister in law and sis-in-law's sister, as well as their beautiful children into our home.

March 12 - March 20: Sleep in living room on partially deflated air mattress while guests sleep in our room, brother sleeps in guest room, and in reality, very little sleeping is accomplished. Have great fun with chubby little nephew, discuss with Lover the probability of us having a child if it guarantees a happy baby like little nephew.

March 20 - March 30: Run around like chicken with head cut off preparing for missions trip to Spain.  Go to four different Walmarts trying to find requested items for family members in Spain. Assist brother with last minute apartment preparations as he gets ready to move out on April 1st.

Thursday, April 1:  Embark on 22 hour long trip to Spain, excited beyond all possible belief. Talk about how it's only been five years since I've been back, but it's been twelve years since Lover has been there.

April 2 - April 12th: Enjoy whirlwind trip to Spain. Try to stay awake throughout jam-packed schedule that includes getting up early and staying up late. Marvel at how little sleep a person really needs to survive. Eat lots of bread, and lots of pastries and drink lots of coffee. Wonder how it was possible to forget how good the food is in Spain.

April 13th: Try to pawn off tickets on anyone who will take them in order to stay in Spain. Admit failure, board US bound plane.

April 14th: Marvel at new level of exhaustion. Cry most of day about missing Spain. Try to get act together to leave town again in three days.

April 14 - 17th: Shop for food, cook dinner. Unpack.  Shop for shower gifts, birthday gifts and housewarming gifts. Attend church service. Have lunch with friend. Do laundry. Have coffee with different friend. Clean house. Start flower plants. Do more laundry. Attend prayer meeting. See brother's new apartment, give housewarming gifts to him and fiancee. Do photoshoot with uncooperative little one. Edit pictures, including ones never gotten to before Spain. Do even more laundry. Help cook birthday dinner for future sister in law, attend birthday party for said SIL. Attend bridal shower, edit more pictures, finish laundry, pack for NYC. Attend family dinner, finish packing.

April 18th: Board plane for NYC.

April 19th: Enjoy shopping in Manhattan. Realize that exhaustion has hit all time high. Take small afternoon nap. Spend evening in hotel room with Lover eating excellent pizza and watching shows. Fall asleep by 10:30pm.

April 20th: Decide to "take it easy." Sleep late, watch several movies and take a nap. Start to feel like a human once again.

April 21 - 25: Enjoy the busy city, have a fun weekend with Lover exploring flea markets and Brooklyn, do lots of shopping. Express amazement that there is still an entire week left away from home in which more shopping can be done.

April 26 - 30 : Decide that I really shouldn't spend more money or I'll undo all that hard savings work we've done. Enjoy lazy days at hotel, botanical gardens and museums. Do a teensy, weensy bit more shopping. ;-)

May 1: Arrive home, wondering where April went, and for that matter, March and February too. Make extensive list of "things to do". Get busy.

So that's where life has taken us the last few months. It has been amazing and awesome and exhausting. I'll be posting pictures next week of our trip to Spain, and maybe a few from NYC as well. Have a wonderful day!

Inspiration Tuesday: Gifts

More inspiration from my files, this time of gifts I would like to make, or pretty ways of wrapping them up!

Gift Ideas:

Frosty Candles Wouldn't these make such a simple, easy Christmas gift? You could keep an eye out for pretty platters to corral the candles.

Recycle broken crayons. I've read that you can use candy molds to shape the crayon wax, and I think these would make super cute gifts for the little guys in the family!

Ideas for wrapping:

Ack! I had a bunch more, but Wordpress seems to have eaten the rest. Sigh. Oh well, if I find them again I will add them to this post. Have a wonderful day everyone!

Lauren's Master Makeover

Not too long ago Lauren asked me for help pulling her master bedroom together. She had all the bare bones in place, and was looking for some help with accessories and art to take the room from good to great. I gave her some suggestions, and now she is back in record time with the after pictures. How fun is that?

For a quick refresher, here's what Lauren's room looked like sans pretty accessories and art.

And here it is today with some new pillows, mirrors and little accessories on the nightstands.

I love how much more pulled together everything looks now. Here are a few more angles for you to see how far this room has come.

Before:

And After:

One more Before:

And one more After:

I love how those mirrors add just a touch of glam to the space without making the room feel really gaudy. And that art on the side wall? Love it. :-) I may just have to get one for my own castle! What's your favorite part?

Oh, and anyone else want some help with their rooms? I have a blast doing this, and I promise I don't only do bedrooms! :-)

Friday Favs: TheHomeCentric

Ok, do you remember Lauren's bedroom idea board? (Side note: After pictures coming up on Monday!Ack! So exciting!) In that board I featured a pillow from Etsy seller TheHomeCentric and suggested that Lauren use it to tie the whole room together. (She did, by the way!) Well, I am head over heels for all of the gorgeous creation on this talented gal's site. Seriously, I can't not think of a pillow that I want from Urvi's selection!

How bout this beauty, that is highlighted for Mother's Day? I love how all the sequins work together to create that awesome wildflower.

And this one, I am just dying over. Linen? Check. Mother of pearl? Check. Made for Jenny? Check, check and CHECK!  I love how neutral it is and yet so divine. Love.IT. :-)

Perhaps your tastes run a little bolder. In that case, you must love this purple damask - it is stunning! And yes, I also have a crush on damask, in case you were wondering.

They're not all light backgrounds though, this clever gal also has this stunning chocolate rose pillow. Me likey.

There are ten pages of pillows to browse through, with all sorts of delights like this pintuck creation,

this ruffly beauty,

or this glam statement piece.

But perhaps you're not a glam girl like me, perhaps you run away from the sparkles and glitter and shine. (Why, I wouldn't know) Not to worry, there are all sorts of muted and toned down beauties as well. Like this rose burnout velvet design,

or this gorgeousness made without any cutting! Amazing!

So head on over to Urvi's shop and peruse all her fabulous pillows! I dare you to leave without buying at least one! :-)

P.S. Nope, I did not receive any endorsements, payments or freebies for posting about this etsy seller. I just thought she was cool. Also, all the pictures are from her shop site. They're not mine, and I don't mean to pass them off as such. :-)

Castle for Sale: Chateau De Farcheville

Felling luxurious today? Here is yet another castle for sale that will make your heart go all a flutter. This gem is located in the heart of France, just outside of Paris. The Chateau de Farcheville is a 14th century castle just 25 minutes away from Paris that has been completely renovated.

It has 18 (!) bedrooms, including the king's room, the queen's room and 31 bathrooms. Talk about never having to share a sink! Personally, I like the queen's room best.

The king's room, while not as much my taste, does boast an adjoined sitting room/salon that is quite beautiful.

Of course, this castle is nothing to shake a stick at. The property spans more than 1000 acres, with private hunting grounds, an indoor pool and a gym/spa, maid's quarters, a private cinema, chapel, bakery and music recording room.

You will have your choice of dining rooms each night, as there are five on the property. The large dining room is incredibly impressive, but the other rooms are equally charming.

There are also four kitchens, this one is exclusively reserved for breakfast. I can imagine a typical morning going something like this: "Hello, Pierre? Where are you?" "Why, I am in the breakfast kitchen, having my croissants from our bakery." Silly you. It's not like he would be in a different kitchen, right?

Of course the grounds are beautiful, with lovely gardens and a well kept courtyard.

All this can be yours for a mere 110 million euros. With the current exchange rate, that's about $150 million dollars. Once again, I am offering to go halvsies with anyone that might be interested in living just outside of Paris. After all, with all those bedrooms, bathrooms and dining rooms, it's not like we'd run into each other. :-)

Inspiration Tuesday: Jewelry and Hair Flowers

In an effort to corral my every increasing project list, (as well as clear all the files off of my hard drive), Inspiration Tuesday will be occupied for the next few weeks with projects that I would love to try out some day. So I apologize for the redundancy for some of you, but maybe someone will get inspired!  I've included links when I have them.

Black and Gold Earrings. Love the little gold dangles, and the contrast between the black and the gold.

Clip On Earring Necklace.  I'll be watching for a beautiful pair of clip-ons to make this little pretty.

No links for these, but I'd love to make something inspired from them.

Hair Flowers:

Feather Light Hair Flowers. Love the textures in this hair flower, although I think I would tone down the frou frou.

Make your own silk flower. Love the little jewels inside this hair flower.
