Day 2: 0n What I'm Doing Differently

Do you ever wish that there was a "do over" button in life? I know I certainly do. I can think of a million ways that I would use this button, but one stands out in particular: those early months after Javi was born.  I made a lot of mistakes with Javi. I try to remind myself that I succeeded in many areas too, and that I was a first time mom; you don't typically get everything right on the first try. But there were a few things that I acknowledged  that I didn't handle right, and vowed to do better with my second baby.

One of those things? Sleep. I was so paranoid about everything with Javi that it really affected my sleep those first few months. (Having an always hungry newborn will also affect your sleep, for the record ;) After a solid nursing session, with my little guy snoozing away in the swing, I would lay in bed, wide awake, mind racing.  I stressed about whether or not he would stop breathing in his sleep. (He didn't) I stressed about the housework that was piling up. (Meh. We all survived) I stressed about my relationship with Lover, and whether or not we would adjust to being parents. (We did, and we're so happy) Paradoxically, I stressed about how little I was sleeping, and how tired I was!

I remember the moment, sitting in Javi's room, in the middle of the night, nursing him, when I realized that just as God can multiply our finances, he can multiply our time. From that point forward I asked God to multiply my sleep, and make 15 minutes seem like hours. And the exhaustion lessened. I prayed this prayer all through my pregnancy with Keilana, because pregnancy makes me body-weary, cry-from-exhaustion tired all.nine.months.long. And I'm praying it now as I snatch a few minutes of shuteye throughout the busy days, and the long nights.

You know that age old advice "sleep when the baby sleeps"? Well, it's good advice, if you're not too paranoid to sleep. I think my advice in the future will be "let God worry about your concerns while you get some sleep!" :-)

A New 31 Days Challenge!

Last year I joined in with the Nester's 31 Days series and  blogged for 31 days straight about what I had learned after going through the new baby stage. I titled the series 31 Days of New Baby Advice and I had a blast writing it. It was cool to see how much I have learned, and the sense of accomplishment was awesome! I'm doing it again this year, but with a different topic - and I'm hoping it will be just as fun!

As of today I have an almost 22 month old son, and an infant daughter who is five weeks old. Yep, we've got two tiny tots under 2 years old! For the first month I was immensely blessed and had tons and tons of help. Lover took a week off of work, then worked a week from home, my mom came over every day to help, and stayed for as long as I needed her. When she flew back to Spain, Lover gave me the best surprise ever, he took the last week  of September off so that we could all spend the time together as a family. It was heaven, and God, who is always in control, knew that Javi would come down with a monster cold that would have made this week oh so hard to do alone.

Now Mom is back in Spain, and Lover is back to work, so it's time to start figuring out life with my two awesome little ones. Time to figure out what a normal day looks like. Except for the fact that we've never done this before, so I guess it's our "New Normal", if you will. It's going to be so great. We're going to have so much fun. And it's gonna be hard and we'll have bad days. But I thought it might be really cool to chronicle the next month of our lives, in little snippets, just a small record of how we're adjusting, what's going on in my brain, and anything else that comes to mind this month.

I'm calling it...wait for it, bet you never guessed...31 Days of Our New Normal! I hope you'll come along for the ride and read my weird brain dumps, and leave a comment or two. Because no one likes to do things alone! Well, except for introverts like me. But I still want to hear from you! :)

Introducing...

Introducing Keilana Ruth, born August 28th, 2013 at 2:20pm. Weighing in at 9 pounds, 2 ounces, and measuring 21 and a half inches long (just like her brother!)

We're all doing well - labor and delivery were as easy as they can be and we are adjusting to being a family of four. :) Javi is absolutely smitten with his little sister. :)

I hate coming up with titles for posts

Today is my due date, and Baby K seems utterly content to stay on the inside. I've cleaned everything I can think of, and then some, so I guess I  have run out of excuses as to why I don't have the time or energy to blog. :) So I thought I'd take this little slice of free time this afternoon and show you what our dining room looks like currently, after a little "tweaking."

The dining room has challenged me since we bought this house. There are things I love about it; the beautiful moulding, the wall color we chose called "First Anniversary" (by Glidden), the huge windows that let in lots of light. But it's also a challenging room since you MUST walk through it to get to the kitchen (used often!), and the basement or out to the back yard. The fact that it is also a pass through room makes it challenging for me. Plus, while I love the wall color and the stained moulding and the wooden dining set and the dressers, and the hardwood floors, all of those elements are brown! Which means brown+brown+brown+brown+brown= lots of brown. (I didn't major in math in college, in case you were wondering :)

Anyway, after trying out some simple switches, like new curtains and moving paintings, I figured out a couple of solutions. One - we needed a lighter wall color in here. Two, the room, while beautiful with all of the layers of neutral colors, needed some bling. Switching out the sepia photos with color photos made a big difference, so I set out to make some similar changes.

First up, I painted the biggest wall a light cream called Oyster by Glidden. It's the same color that's in our living room and our upstairs hallway, and it's such a beautiful, warm cream.  This instantly made the room brighter and cheerier, and provided some contrast with our table and chairs. Success!

I carried that creamy lightness over to the next wall (with the word art) with a set of six mirrors that I found at a church sale that are AWESOME. I think they cost me $2 and I love them to pieces.  They're so pretty and they break up all the brown on that wall. I also added two iron brackets to the corners of the pass through (from HobLob).

They make that little pass through window look a lot more charming and intentional. While it's always been useful, it has not always been charming. :)

Next up, the wall opposite the now cream wall, that used to house a desk. I ripped that entire desk out one day with girl power, and I'm so glad it's gone. It was just a clutter magnet, and a space eater.

I'd love to find a bigger dresser/buffet for that wall, but it works for now. So much better than this, right? Also, ten points if you can spy the sippy cup in the picture up above. :) Someone likes to leave his drinks everywhere. :)

Last up, the front window wall. I switched the blue curtains back in, because I missed the originality they gave this room. Ideally I'd love to hang that rod up above the window moulding, so that the curtains hang down on the outsides of the window moulding. But they're a smidge too short for that, so until I come up with a brilliant solution, they're staying put.

Speaking of staying put, one thing that did NOT stay put was the bookshelf in the corner there. It was functional, but too much of a black hole sucking up all the light in that corner. And when paired with the refinished dresser on the other side, this wall felt very, very heavy. So one evening I asked Lover if I emptied the bookshelf, would he pretty please carry it to the basement for me? And he agreed to move it, but told me not to bother emptying it. He then proceeded to pick up the entire BOOK LADEN bookshelf, carried it down a flight of stairs and set it in place in the basement without breaking a sweat. HOT, I tell you. My heart still gets pittery pattery now, thinking about it. What you're not turned on by raw displays of muscle and manpower? Anyway. Where were we? Ah yes, dining room.

Two last little switcheroos - I ordered new, sparkly knobs for that refinished dresser. When I put the glass knobs on it after refinishing it years ago, I knew they weren't right. But I lived with them until the day that I found, upon browsing Pinterest, an inspiration pic of a dark wood dresser with sparkly gold knobs and thought "that's what my dresser needs!" I took a horribly bad picture of them, my apologies, but in person, I love them. They're perfect.

And lastly, the ceiling fan (not my favorite but oh-so-functional) lost a little bit of weight. It had a decorative leafy detail that fit over that glass orb, and I ditched it. Much better. Sometimes less detail is more.

So there you have it. A cleaned up, cleaned out, lighter and sparklier version of this room. And it's working pretty well for us. I'm sure there will be more tweaking in the future but I'm happy with the progress. Everyone that comes over immediately comments on the change, which tells me I'm on the right track. :) Anyways, I'm off to sneak in a nap, and here's hoping that the next time I sign on, it's to introduce Baby K! Ciao!

Working Away on Projects!

There are lots of projects and stories that I want to blog about. But taking precedence in my time management is the fact that my family/houseguests are arriving in less than two weeks, and a certain baby girl will be making her appearance shortly after that. Right, baby girl? Wanna join the world a little early? So my focus has been on making sure we are prepared for baby (diapers! hundreds of them! tiny pink onesies!) and guests (they appreciate things like beds and clean towels, or so I hear).

I've also been finishing up some nagging house projects like fixing broken trim, cleaning grout, and touching up paint. Just like with Javi, clearing up my ongoing to-do list is apparently my way of feeling ready for a new baby to join us. These are the things that taunt me in the middle of the night, that apparently are of paramount importance and must absolutely be accomplished before D-Day. :)

My photography business has been non-stop lately, just when I think that I've finished up the last shoot until after the babe is born, someone else contacts me out of the blue and wants pictures done in the next few weeks. It's keeping me busy and it's nice to "be in demand." I should get pregnant more often, it's good for business! :) I've got another newborn shoot to finish up, and possibly two more shoots to fit in (and edit!) in the next couple of weeks. Of course, with this insane heat wave, I don't stray far from my AC, which makes scheduling shoots a little more complicated. :)

I'm thinking a lot and trying to pray a lot about the transition from a family of three to a family of four. I've gotten some really good advice from friends on what TO do, and what NOT to do. We're trying to simplify our schedule as much as possible for that "fourth trimester" time, and think through ways to help Javi adjust. But really, there's only so much I can do to prepare, and for the rest, I need to trust that God will bring us through, and bring us closer together as husband and wife, as parents and as a family.

Some things to look forward to seeing on this here blog;

  • some updates in the dining room - we painted, switched curtains (again!) moved some furniture, added some bling... it's looking nice.

  • some crazy before and after pictures of our back yard. I'd forgotten what a train wreck we started out with. :)

  • pictures of the basement bathroom- we finally have a full bathroom in the basement, now I just need to spend some time decorating! Darn!

  • pictures of the basement as of right now. Not done, but way better than before!

  • some updates and changes in the master bedroom. I feel like I am finally figuring that room out.

  • more fun stuff that I am forgetting. :) Anyways, stay tuned!

Summer Livin'

So the heat wave finally broke today, and we spent the morning outside doing yard work , playing with balls and taking pictures. (side note: apparently yard work is not all one word? did not know that) This latest stretch of 90 degree days helped all the blackberries in the back of our yard to ripen up perfectly, and for some unknown reason the birds are leaving them alone this year! A certain small someone has discovered that the berries are at just the right height for helping yourself. Oh the joys of being a toddler! A self serve snack bar right outside your door! Does life get any better?

Ball cap, cutey pants shorts and no shirt. I can't handle the cuteness.

He only ate the ripe ones, leaving the red ones on to finish cooking. That boy is a smartypants.

Tiny fingers. Oy. Good thing I am already preggers again, these pictures make me want a million pint size kiddos running around.

Javi, are you eating blackberries?

Just a couple more from back here,

the best way to eat them is to smoosh them all in at once.

CANNOT handle the cuteness. SRSLY. :)

30 Weeks

On Monday I hit the 30 week mark. For some reason this is one of the milestones I look forward to most, perhaps because there are less than three months left? Anyways, I thought I'd post a couple of the pictures I took today, along with a list of 30 things I am grateful for right now, in this stage of pregnancy. As I talked about in my last post, pregnancy is a challenge for me, so I thought it would be really beneficial to list out some things that I am thankful for.

1. I'm grateful for a husband who loves me unconditionally, puts up with my emotional crazy and moodiness, and encourages me every day.

2. I'm grateful for my little Javi as he is a constant reminder of the joy that will come!

3. I'm grateful for the "lousy" weather we've had so far this summer, all this rain is keeping me cool!

4. I'm grateful for sweet friends who share clothes, diapers, blankets, body pillows and anything else I need for baby K.

5. I'm grateful for modern medicine, and the wonders of Prevacid. Nasty heartburn be gone!

6. I'm grateful for the great deal we got on an air conditioner. I'm positive we'll be needing that!

7. I'm grateful for a break from the nausea and daily sacrifices of food. :)

8. I'm grateful for a doctor who is laid back and calm, but still takes the time to listen to my concerns.

9. I'm grateful for a healthy, growing baby, with no complications. In that sense it's an easy pregnancy.

10. I'm grateful for the little kicks and jabs I feel all day and night, letting me know that baby is healthy.

11. I'm grateful for understanding family and friends that help me out on the hard days.

12. I'm grateful that we've had no trouble getting pregnant either time. So many struggle with infertility, and I know we are blessed.

13. I'm grateful for Javi's energy and busyness, that keep the days flying by as we wait to meet this little babe.

14. I'm grateful for nap times! :)

15. I'm grateful that our kids will be close together, and won't remember not having each other.

16. I'm grateful that this time we're having a summer baby. It's so hard to keep an infant warm in winter!

17. I'm grateful that God gives me the patience, grace and energy for each day, if I just ask for it!

18. I'm grateful that I am able to drink water again without puking! That was not a fun phase.

19. I am grateful for fantastic back rubs from Lover that make me sleepy in 2.3 seconds.

20. I am grateful that human gestation only lasts 9 months, not 2.5 years like an elephant :)

21. I'm grateful to have nice friends who only compliment me and tell me "how great I look." I really appreciate that. And them!

22. I'm grateful for the option of an epidural.

23. I'm grateful that God has blessed me with many wise mothers around me who are willing to take the time to teach me how to be a better mom.

24. I'm grateful for a husband who works even harder while I am pregnant, filling in all the gaps that my lack of energy create.

25. I'm grateful that I passed my glucose test! This momma needs her ice cream! :)

26. I'm grateful that we are having a daughter. I'm getting excited about having a little girl!

27. I'm grateful my mom will be staying with us for a few weeks as we navigate the change from one kiddo to two!

28. I'm grateful the hospital is less than fifteen minutes away. :)

29. I'm grateful to still be able to reach my toes!

30. I'm grateful that there are only 66 days left of this pregnancy! (Be on time, Baby K!)
